TVB D.I.E.

Warning: This is a satirical post that pokes fun at the alternative ending of D.I.E. and suggests an ulterior motive for its production. Spoilers regarding the fate of Roger Kwok’s character in both the original and alternative endings are revealed.

In the official ending of the highly-rated series D.I.E., Yue Sir (Roger Kwok) sacrificed his own life to save Ching Ching (Sonija Kwok), leaving her to care for their daughter. Due to the pensive nature of this closure, Hong Kong viewers were outraged and demanded that TVB produce an alternative ending, particularly one in which Yue Sir survives the car crash. They argued that since TVB series have always ended on some kind of a happy note – lost lovers reunite, villains are cleansed by the power of an imaginary force, infertile women are suddenly blessed with the ability to bear children, and fathers and sons reconcile – this one should have followed the trend. Obligingly, TVB released a special 30-minute gag ending that revealed Bobby Auyeung‘s character from Dicey Business to be the driver who hit Yue Sir on his way to making bootleg copies. Various D.I.E. characters traveled back in time to prevent the accident.

However, this alternative ending was actually a derivative of the one TVB had intended to air as the original. The purpose was to take advantage of a high-profile finale in order to promote the company’s anti-piracy agenda. In the original version, Bobby’s character was made an example of the uploaders/downloaders who continue to participate in illegal activities.

I can’t be the only one who thinks there was some hidden message in that alternative ending…

On a more serious note, I actually enjoyed watching D.I.E. and was glad it received such high ratings. Although the cases weren’t very complex, it was nice to see Margie Tsang back on-screen again. My preference is the original ending that TVB released. :)
BTW, Pokémon is one of those anime series I never get sick of poking fun at.

haha i love the orginial ending. it fitted the story way more. i dont know why people didn’t like it, maybe because it suppose to me a happy series. :D i like your charizard ending too its cute :)

I did not get the chance to view the alternate ending, but I see nothing wrong in having a “sad ending” for D.I.E. It was appropriate and made me like Chi Long more. :) Their baby was a bit ‘out of nowhere’ though. :\ And it strikes me odd that when Chi Long was in ICU, Hugo was there to accompany both him and Ching Ching. Why is Hugo there? In terms of close relatives, Chi Ching and her father would be next in line instead. One other tidbit – the ring Ching Ching wore on Chi Long’s finger is actually a female design. lol. Okay, I should stop paying such close attention to TVB details. :P

I only started to watch D.I.E., so I have no idea which one is better. However, in general I don’t like the idea of filming two endings. It’s sort of cheating to me. The producers should’ve followed their gut feeling from the beginning. So, I think that mean I the original, original one.

  5. Aeris says:

think, thanks! I feel the same way as well. The original ending was much more appropriate.

TkN, I see nothing wrong with the “sad ending” as well. Their baby was unexpected and I didn’t even know she was pregnant. Wow, you do pay close attention to these things. You make me feel as if I spaced out at the end, lol. I actually know nothing about rings…

Kimmie, you don’t like my ending with Charizard? :( Haha. Actually, you make a good point. I think the producers wanted to give viewers something to laugh at.

I liked the ending of D.I.E. It was poignant and pretty damn unexpected, which makes it a good drama.

Seriously, HK people need to stop complaining about FICTIONAL DRAMAS and get a life.

The alternative ending targeted the issue of piracy, but it also poked fun at the viewers. I like it. I’ve never really seen a drama that does that.Kudos to them.

  7. Aeris says:

Hi Yin. Thank you for stopping by.

I think we’ll be seeing more alternative endings for series that don’t end on a “happy” note. TVB seems to be getting into the habit of producing them now as an alternative ending was just released for Catch Me Now.

  8. Mayce says:

I haven’t seen the alternate ending to D.I.E. but I enjoyed the original ending seeing as it fit the story more. Really… so ‘Catch Me Now’ has an alternate ending as well? I’m just starting to watch that, lol.
