Singing is not the same as acting. A mediocre actor can greatly improve his skills with time and training, but a singer with limited vocal abilities can only go so far. Unfortunately, one must have the talent to begin with, and I feel that the TVB actors and actresses releasing albums now don’t qualify. Many of their live performances are simply horrendous that “nervousness” or “inexperience” aren’t acceptable excuses. The true test of any singer is on-stage, especially with the “enhancement” techniques available today. Outside of TVB, there are already very few in Hong Kong who can truly sing – that was not the case during the 80’s and 90’s. I really miss hearing Faye Wong and others who sang just as well outside the studio as they did inside it! Sigh.
So true, many TVB artistes don’t have 自知之明 and think they can sing and go on releasing music albums. I specifically have 2 in mind. Yes, Bosco and Kate.
You’re too right! However, Linda and Myolie aren’t even that much better than Bosco and Kate. They all have weak voices and poor tuning. As for Ray, he is definitely beyond the other four, but he’s still an average singer by my standards, especially considering the truly great or good ones out there. That’s not going to be a popular opinion among the younger TVB crowd. Oh well, at least I’m not on YouTube.
I agree, Raymond is only considered an average singer compared to the professional singers. I don’t know if you agree or not, but Steven Ma is one of the better singers in TVB. Even though he started off as a singer, his high and low keys are superb, but Steven seems to lack some “luck” in his music career.
I agree with you to a certain extent. Of all the TVB actors available to record theme songs, he would be at or near the top of the list. However, I’ve always found his vocals to be forced and sometimes his strength is borderline screaming. I don’t think he’s a good singer.
Interesting, Kate is taking the hip hop route? The others are sticking to ballads and pop songs, right? I know Myolie has more of a rock sound. I’m guessing Kate or her record company is trying to build a different image. They all have many fans, so she’ll probably be as successful as her colleagues.
Luckily, there are still talented musicians who can sing, write, and play arriving onto the Hong Kong scene. I love Khalil Fong’s soul music. What a breath of fresh air!
lol very true! it’s hard to find people who can sing very well as well as act..it’s mostly either one or the either, and lately, tvb seems to really like turning actors/actresses into singers and some really can’t sing. your comic basically summarized everything! awesome job~
Very true. I think that’s exactly where the biggest problem lies. TVB continues to promote their young stars as these “multi-talented” actor-turned-singers when they’re not up to the challenge. Quality is favored over quantity, right?
this just popped into my head after reading about steven…what about kevin cheng? i’ve only heard him sing a couple theme songs and he was also a singer before. what are your opinions about him?
You’re probably not asking for my opinion, but I think Kevin Cheng does not know how to use his voice. He has too much nasal tones. Plus, he could use more emotion while singing.
I’m not sure if you’re asking for my opinion either, but I’ll be nosy and join the discussion.
I remember seeing Kevin in a few award shows back in the 90’s, but he wasn’t a very popular singer. Those days the Four Heavenly Kings, Faye Wong, Shirley Kwan, Sandy Lam, Sally Yip, Grasshopper, and others dominated the HK music industry. It was a time when newcomers really needed to be talented in order to compete or stay alive – obviously not the same situation today. If you ask me, he has never been a strong vocalist…
I don’t really care about Kevin’s singing career, nor do I care about Ron’s. I mean.. their rumoured girlfriends have better singing careers than them! Niki and Ella.. etc etc. Am I going off topic?? =//
Yeah, I love Khalil Fong’s music! As well as Fiona Sit’s music too! Anyway as a fan of both Fung and Kate, I wish them all the best. Really. I do know that Fung is definitely much better than the others but he needs to be more versatile!
Yeah, Kate will be going the fast song route. She said so herself. She will be dancing quite a bit. I think she is signed on to BMA.
Aeris, I love your satire!! At least I could take jokes eh! Hahahah.
It’s nice to see the expansion of Khalil’s fan base this past year. Although I wouldn’t say he’s a great singer, I love his soulful voice and he continues to improve as a live performer. It’s his amazing songwriting/composition skills that really impress me! What do you two think of his new Orange Moon album? I was expecting less of a pop sound, but at least he’s still sticking to his roots.
To be honest, I would rather he work with other female artists such as Ivana Wong and maybe even Kay Tse. Fiona actually has a very limited range.
I love his newest album, “Orange Moon!” I’ve actually been a fan since his first album, “Soul Boy.”
Fiona Sit’s voice is suited for his compositions, but I do agree that Fiona can’t hit the high notes. You know who else would be different other that Ivana or Kay? Janice! That would be something neat! I think!
I’ve also been his fan since the beginning. I remember being very bored with the generic pop music (thank you Twins) in Hong Kong until I picked up Soul Boy.
Khalil and Janice? Although I’m not her fan, she’s such a better singer than Fiona will ever be, and I agree that they would make a fresh combo. However, I just think she has a tendency to struggle in the low register (she easily reaches the high notes) and sometimes her voice sounds really nasally.
Some? You’re being too kind! I’m going with pretty much all of them. I honestly can’t believe that they would be able to produce, release, and successfully sell albums elsewhere – not even in America.

all of TVB singers are from below average to terrible, even Raymond Lam is just “kindergarten” singer imo
hope Tavia wont be next singer-to-be
Hi Noah. I agree with you. Tavia seems to be one of the next actresses in line, and she did sing the theme song of Sweetness in the Salt with Steven Ma. Let’s hope Ms. Lok doesn’t have her way this time, but she usually does.
Dont worry, Tavia won’t be one of them. If there HAS to be one, it will be Fala. She has been hinting SO clearly that she wants a singing contract. Geez.
Well, I’m going to have to be bias and say that Fala has a pretty decent voice. Although I hope she doesn’t start off another type of career until she can get over her accent, even in English I could hear something o_o Her live performance in JSG (when she sang “Ice Cream” was okay, but she needs to “咬字” I actually can’t make out some of the words she sang.
Gosh.. I kinda dislike Fala’s version of Ice Cream, but she came to Singapore twice and sang mandarin songs live, which is acceptable, at least she doesn’t go off key. Maybe she should stick to singing mandarin songs. But no.. no more albums, please. (Gonna go broke just to support Fung and Kate – BMA! Gosh, look what they did to Niki, I hope they don’t do that to Kate too, and Niki’s talented, I don’t understand why do they have to keep delaying it. Geez)
i think fala has a relatively good singing voice, but like you said, it’s better for her to practice her canto first and get rid of the accent. but when she sang ice cream, it was actually surprisingly good
That’s good thinking! Wait, what do you mean by “more days to see the sun”?
Unfortunately, there are many fans who have that mentality. They will always support their favorite actors and buy their albums even if they can’t actually sing well. That bothers me more than it should; I’ll never understand. Singing contracts should be given based on talent – not popularity or looks. HK executives seriously need to start recruiting newcomers from singing competitions again or even listening to demo tapes. There is massive potential out there and many talented artists aren’t being represented.
Aeris, i mean Hk music industry will go to the dark age and no more any sight of sun with all untalented singers. have you watched Astro award show? Linda, Bosco, Raymond and Susanna performed there, and you can see the different btw Susanna and the other three. Gosh, wasting money for karaoke CD is bullshit while a lot of people dont have food and clothes.
You’re even more pessimistic than I am, Noah! I can understand where you’re coming from though.
Regarding that Astro award show, I didn’t watch it… which was a good decision, right? Haha. Actually, I don’t watch award shows in general. To be honest, Susanna wasn’t one of the best (female) singers in her generation. Francis Yip, Paula Tsui, and Jenny Tseng were the real amazing singers, and they sang equally memorable theme songs written by the legendary Joseph Koo/Wong Jim combo. Remember The Bund?
As the Borg say, “resistance is futile.” *fake glasses fogging up* I’m just hoping Tavia doesn’t dive in too as we’re seeing more females than males releasing albums. She’s one of my favorite young actresses, but she can’t sing. Don’t do it!
Heh, I think this is my first time commenting and this is late but I think this has been the first tvb-related ‘thing’ I’ve laughed at since a very long time ago.
Err, yeah about Tavia singing. As much as I’m a fan, I seriously hope she won’t release an album. For one, I don’t want to waste my money on tvb artistes…even though the only ones I bought were Raymond’s. Anyway, yeah, especially when I could buy Leehom’s and ahem-kpop-ahem (so I’m gonna agree with kimmiemai :)) But yeah, I like Tavia’s and Fala’s voices…but I just hope they stick to singing themesongs/subthemes.
Hi flor.a! Let me officially welcome you to this blog. It’s never too late to make a comment.
I agree with what you wrote, though I don’t like Tavia and Fala’s voices. At least we’ve reached a common ground – they both shouldn’t be releasing albums.
Hahahha, I guess I like their voices cause I don’t have to listen to something overly high pitched Their voices are deeper. Heh, yeah I don’t think I’m gonna fork out anymore money to buy tvb artistes albums.
Hahaha I just hope they don’t do shitty stuff like releasing millions of versions of the same disc! If they do, I’d rather fork out money to buy Khalil’s.
Of course I am happy that more people are leaving comments!
Yep, fork over money to those talented enough to compose, produce, and sing their own songs. Do away with recycled pop tracks and make way for more creative music.
LOL, awesome guide! I’ll have to disagree with the assessment of Raymond though… probably because I’m a fan of his. I agree, that he certainly has very far to go, and I’m missing some variety from him. And for Tavia and Fala… Tavia actually can sing quite a bit, she has a sweet voice but not too soft. But as for fala…I dn’t think she can sing at all. She should jst improve on her acting more, esecailly since her acting is still quite poor. Especially that accent.
Hello babys2. Thank you for your opinion, but I must disagree with your assessment on the quality of Myolie, Linda, and Tavia’s voices. I’ve sampled their albums and live performances (no lip-syncing), and based on my standards, they can’t sing. No amount of training and experience should make up for the lack of natural talent. Thus, the “nervous” argument is not valid. How many years must we give their voices to mature? The biggest reason they even have record deals in Hong Kong is their popularity as TVB actors. I believe the legitimate path to the music industry is through singing competitions or perhaps sending in demo tapes – unless the candidates are song-writers or just scary good like Jacky Cheung (he won a national contest). HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!
that is just simply AWESOME!!! and so truee!
I’m glad you enjoyed the comic.
See you around.
Aeris, you sure have a way of expressing your thoughts!
Rants are usually not fun to write or read for me, so I try to avoid those. The flow chart seemed like a more interactive approach.
So true, many TVB artistes don’t have 自知之明 and think they can sing and go on releasing music albums. I specifically have 2 in mind. Yes, Bosco and Kate.
Also, Kate is going to go the sexy, hip hop road in singing.
You’re too right! However, Linda and Myolie aren’t even that much better than Bosco and Kate. They all have weak voices and poor tuning. Just turn to Kpop. haha
Luckily, there are still talented musicians who can sing, write, and play arriving onto the Hong Kong scene. I love Khalil Fong’s soul music. What a breath of fresh air!
I, too love Khalil!
haha way to come back with a bang!
Let’s hope it’s not a one-hit wonder. Haha.

Thank you for the positive responses, everyone! Is it shameful to admit that I’m a bit surprised no one attempted to rip out my heart?
this just popped into my head after reading about steven…what about kevin cheng? i’ve only heard him sing a couple theme songs and he was also a singer before. what are your opinions about him?

I don’t really care about Kevin’s singing career, nor do I care about Ron’s. I mean.. their rumoured girlfriends have better singing careers than them! Niki and Ella.. etc etc. Am I going off topic?? =//
Nope, keep going. I’m actually thinking about starting a forum now. j/k I wonder how long this can last. Haha.
LOL vee, that is so true
Same goes for Bosco and Myolie (IMO, Myolie sings better than Bosco). Haha

I love Khalil’s music, Orange Moon is good, really impressed. But Wonderland still does it for me!
I love his newest album, “Orange Moon!” I’ve actually been a fan since his first album, “Soul Boy.”

Oh, by the way, I found this cover of “Love Song” on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX9A73DX6qs&feature=channel. She’s actually a backup singer for Leehom Wang and David Tao. Love the piano arrangement.
MY FELLOW COUNTRYMEN! I FEEL SO PROUD. Lol.
I wish to meet Khalil too! Anyway, I really like Fiona’s voice though. I don’t know why.
I just realized why you said that. You’re from Singapore too, right?
Yeah! I am! Stefanie Sun is my countrymen too! I met her once, well… She was shopping. Lol.
*covers ears* Some of the TVB singers these days are just.. Eww. They’re trying to kill our ears. Awesome “guide”! *falls off chair laughing*
Thanks, cx839.

Do you have a guide to become a tvb actor/actress?
